Kansas City is proud to be home to a rising star making waves in the city’s Black literary world. Tyree Colbert, a 16-year-old student at Center High School, has gained major recognition for his recently published book Same Window Different Views.
Inspired by his father and the world he sees around him, Tyree’s book tackles themes of grief and emotions felt by many young Black people.
“What inspired me to write a book was my father and losing my mother and 3 brothers,” Tyree told The Defender. “I hope young Black youth take from my book that the way you feel is not just you, there are others that feel the same way and it’s ok to talk about it.”
In addition to being an accomplished author, Tyree is a future-oriented young man with big plans.
“My favorite Black historical figure is Malcolm X. My vision for the future is to graduate, go to TSU, get my business degree and to own real estate throughout the city and give back to the whole city.”
“This is my first book but it will not be my last”
He has received widespread recognition from Black students across the city – and even the Mayor.
Congratulations to Tyree Colbert on his stunning debut, and we look forward to seeing what this talented young man will achieve in the future.
