If that sounds good to you, get ready to experience all this and more at the National Black United Front – Kansas City’s 34th Annual Umoja Karamu (Unity Feast), happening this Sunday, November 26th, at 4:00 p.m.
This enriching event, held at the NBUF-KC office located at 7714 Prospect Ave, promises a blend of cultural heritage, solidarity, and delicious cuisine. And the best part? It’s absolutely free and open to everyone!
The Umoja Karamu is a time-honored tradition, established in 1971 in Washington, D.C., symbolizing the strength and unity of the Black family.
Nadine Farris, this year’s coordinator, highlights the significance of the feast: “The Umoja Karamu continues our tradition of celebrating cultural holidays that have positive meaning to us as African people. We believe that a strong Black family is a key component in the building of a strong Black nation.”
This meaningful celebration unfolds through five poignant periods, each reflecting critical phases of the Black experience, from the roots in Africa, through the trauma of enslavement, the bravery of emancipation struggles, to the ongoing fight for liberation, and looking towards a hopeful future.
These eras will be brought to life through heartfelt presentations by young members of the community, offering both a reflective and educational journey for all attendees.
Following the ceremony, the evening blossoms into a communal feast. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish (keeping it pork-free) to share, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.
This feast isn’t just about enjoying great food; it’s a symbolic gathering, a celebration of our journey, and an affirmation of our collective strength and unity.
