The Kansas City Defender Global News Briefing | The world’s most important news in 5 minutes, from a Black, anti-imperialist lens.
If you are reading this from Kansas City, here is why this matters to you right now.
Your gas prices are climbing. Your groceries cost more this month than last. The global economy is in an energy crisis the International Energy Agency says is worse than the 1970s oil shocks. All of it traces back to an illegal war your government launched without your permission, without congressional authorization, and without a shred of legal justification.
One radar system destroyed in this war cost American taxpayers a billion dollars. One. That is more than enough to fund every public school in Kansas City, build 5 full-service grocery stores in Black and brown neighborhoods, and completely eradicate homelessness in Kansas City. Instead, it is smoldering wreckage in the Qatari desert.
This is what empire costs, not in the abstract, but in real dollars, in your grocery bill, your rent, your gas tank, your child’s classroom.
At The Defender, we have always understood that our local reality cannot be severed from international politics. The line between a Tomahawk missile falling on a girls’ school in southern Iran and a grocery desert stretching across the East Side is not as long as they want you to believe. The capitalist imperialist forces that bomb children abroad are the same ones that starve our children on 31st and Prospect. Empire does not stop at the border. It starts at home.
Here is everything Western media will not tell you plainly.
🩸 How the War Started

On February 28, the United States and the genocidal settler colony of israel launched a massive coordinated military assault on the Islamic Republic of Iran. On the very first day:
- They assassinated Iran’s Supreme Leader. Imagine a foreign country assassinating a sitting U.S. president. That is the equivalent of what the settler colony did, using CIA intelligence to kill Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a targeted airstrike on his compound in Tehran. It is illegal under international law. Full stop.
- Iran had built what military analysts call a “mosaic defense,” a system designed to survive exactly this kind of decapitation strike.
- Within 48 hours, an interim leadership council was governing. Within eight days, a new Supreme Leader was named.
- The regime did not collapse and was only emboldened with younger and more fearless leadership.
- They bombed a girls’ school and killed over 165 children. The rogue United States attacked the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school in the southern city of Minab during class hours.
- Most of the dead were girls ages 7 to 12. The roof collapsed on them at their desks.
🔥 What They Don’t Want You to Know
This is the part Western media buries, minimizes, or refuses to say out loud: the United States and the genocidal settler colony are behaving as rogue terrorist states.
- Not only did the war start with a massacre of schoolgirls by the U.S. and israel. But now, 66 schools have been bombed. At least 1,500 killed in Iran, including over 200 children. Over 12,000 wounded.
- The U.S. reportedly used double-tap airstrikes, hitting the same targets twice to kill first responders arriving to help the wounded.
Trump threatened to bomb civilian power plants. On Saturday, he gave Iran a 48-hour ultimatum: reopen the Strait of Hormuz or he would “obliterate” Iran’s power grid.
- Bombing civilian energy infrastructure is a war crime under international humanitarian law.
- Plunging 90 million people into darkness is collective punishment.
- Iran called the bluff. Trump blinked. This morning. Iran’s IRGC said if power plants were hit, they would target every power station and desalination plant in the region serving American interests. The Defense Council warned any coastal attack triggers the mining of the entire Persian Gulf.
- The deadline expired this morning. Trump backed down.
- He announced a five-day “postponement,” claiming productive talks.
- Iran’s foreign ministry responded within hours: there are no talks. He retreated because of energy prices.
- Trump’s own counterterrorism chief resigned and called the war a lie. Joe Kent, handpicked by Trump, quit and stated publicly that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States.
💥 What Iran Actually Did
Western media told you Iran’s military was destroyed. Here is what actually happened.
- They downed an F-35. No military on Earth had ever done this. The $100 million stealth fighter was forced into an emergency landing. The U.S. launched a formal investigation into how a country they said was “decimated” accomplished what no nation in history has.
- They destroyed billions in U.S. radar infrastructure. ABC News confirmed through satellite imagery that Iran struck at least 10 radar sites across the Gulf.
- A billion-dollar phased array radar in Qatar, a half-billion-dollar system in Saudi Arabia.
- They blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. For readers unfamiliar: this is the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes through it daily. Whoever controls it controls the global energy supply.
- They revealed missile capabilities the West didn’t know existed. Iran fired two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, a U.S.-UK base in the Indian Ocean, 4,000 kilometers away.
✊ Why Iran Will Not Break
- This is existential. When your enemy’s stated goal is the completely destruction of your state or its ability to defend itself, when they have assassinated your Supreme Leader, bombed your children’s schools, and threatened to cut your electricity, you are fighting for survival.
- They have leverage the U.S. cannot neutralize. The Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s weapon. As long as it stays closed, the global economy bleeds. The U.S. has air superiority. Iran has geography.
- They survived decapitation. 40 senior officials killed on Day One. New leadership in 48 hours. New Supreme Leader in eight days. Continuous retaliatory strikes throughout. This is a state that planned for this scenario and executed its contingency.
- The world is not with America. China’s envoy said this war “should never have happened.” Spain’s PM opposed it publicly. Former Irish President Mary Robinson called it illegal. 56% of Americans oppose funding the war. Even John Bolton called Trump’s strategy delusional.
- Iran is not alone in what it represents. Iran has stood with Palestine when almost no state would. It is aligned with nations across the Global South who see this war for what it is: the same imperial playbook used against Iraq, Libya, Syria, and every country that refused to kneel.
