The Kansas City Defender’s Annual Christmas Eve Grocery Buyout Returns

Our most ambitious mutual aid initiative returns this holiday season, providing direct cash support to Black families for fresh groceries and toys

The Kansas City Defender is launching our most ambitious Grocery Buyout yet this Christmas Eve. Following the tremendous success of our Black August Buyout – which raised an astounding $7,500 in just 12 hours – we’re returning for our final Mutual Aid event of the year, where we hope to distribute $10,000 direct cash to Black families!

When: December 24th (Christmas Eve)
Where: We don’t announce the location beforehand

ABOUT THE PROGRAM & WHY NOW ❤️

We are not, and never have been simply a news outlet like CNN or the New York Times. We are a Black radical community organization dedicated to collectively raising the Power and Consciousness of Black people, and using creative ways to show love and support for our community.

  • Our Buyouts are radical interventions aimed at restoring dignity, impacting our people’s material conditions, fostering love and hope, and even if only for one batch of groceries or toys, alleviating the crushing weight of capitalism and poverty.
  • More important to us than anything, is building relationships and trust with everyday people and letting folks know we are a Community Platform in service to The People. This is why we continue to pilot a variety of Innovative Community Survival Programs.

Black August Grocery Buyout, August 2024

1 More Thing: The history of our Grocery Buyouts tells a deeper story about our commitment to revolutionary community journalism.

  • Our first pop-up two years ago was located at Wild Woody’s Food Center on 31st Street, in a predominantly Black, divested neighborhood.
  • Our second, at Sunfresh on 31st & Prospect, was chosen less than a month after we’d broken the story of a white serial killer kidnapping and murdering Black women in that same area just months before (in 2022).
  • In other words, these are deliberate choices that connect our mutual aid work to the broader struggle for Black liberation and community survival.
