In a city grappling with stark economic disparities, skyrocketing rent, and deep-seated segregation, Kansas City’s Black community isn’t waiting for a savior.
The Heartland Equitable Development Symposium, set for October 19th-20th at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, represents a strategic mobilization rather than a mere gathering.
This symposium is an urgent and practical response to systemic barriers, aimed at funneling critical resources directly into Black-led economic and real estate development projects. It’s not about profit, it’s about pooling collective power to address the very real issue of and economic injustice.
THE BACKGROUND:
The symposium aims to be a nexus for transformation, linking Black business owners and developers with philanthropic, private, social impact, government, and enterprise business capital partners.
All this is achieved at no financial cost to attendees, underscoring the event’s commitment to breaking down the barriers that have historically stifled Black economic advancement.
Organizations like the Kansas City G.I.F.T., which last year awarded $460,000 in grants to 21 Black-owned businesses, are leading collaborators in this initiative, alongside Equitable Development Partners, LLC, the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Civic Council among others.
Over $4 Billion in identified opportunities in Transit Oriented Development and Infill Development on Kansas City’s eastside will be showcased—bringing tangible economic benefits to underserved Black communities.

While we stand firmly against Black capitalism; we do support initiatives that materially improve the conditions of the people and address the systemic inequalities that have plagued our communities for generations.
The Heartland Equitable Development Symposium is more than an event; it’s a movement committed to upending the deeply ingrained disparities that have perpetuated economic hardship within Kansas City’s Black community.
From job creation to housing stability, the projected impact of this symposium is monumental and an example of how we can be agents of our own destiny, circulating resources within our community to create lasting change.
