From white male Kansas Congressman Ron Estes, to the also white male Executive Editor at right-wing North KC newspaper “The Heartlander”, white men are outraged that a course dedicated to studying “Angry White Male Studies” is being taught at the University of Kansas this semester.
“Imagine if a certain word was changed? Outrage would be everywhere.” complained a white male KU student Alex Dwyer, seeming to allude to if there was a course titled “Angry Black Men”. Dwyer’s argument, and many others, appear to not be aware of the fact that white men are the only demographic to have waged genocide on Indigenous people in the U.S., to have led terrorism campaigns (KKK) and the chattel slavery of Black & African peoples, and most recently, to have led a coup against the United States government.
Outrage about the course goes back to 2019 when it first began being taught, but has been reignited by right-wing news outlet “The Heartlander”.
The course description reads, “This course charts the rise of the ‘angry white male’ in America and Britain since the 1950s, exploring the deeper sources of this emotional state while evaluating recent manifestations of male anger.”
The professor of the course, Christopher Forth, says the class will ask the following questions: “Where does he come from? What’s he angry about? Is his anger misplaced? Is he blaming the right people? How long has this been going on? Is he a global phenomenon? And how do we move forward?”
Forth is a professor of history and the Dean’s Professor of Humanities.
