Tyler Perry, the entertainment mogul known for his extensive filmography, questionable story-plots, and ownership of one of the largest film studios in the United States, has placed a monumental $800 million expansion of Tyler Perry Studios on indefinite hold.
The cause for this sudden shift? The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence in film production, epitomized by OpenAI’s Sora. I previously wrote about the recently launched AI model last week, if you aren’t familiar with the technology, I’d suggest giving that a quick read.
Below are two videos that were entirely generated by OpenAI’s new video generation model, Sora.
AI Hits Film & Entertainment Sooner Than Expected
Perry, in a candid discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, shared his astonishment upon witnessing Sora’s capabilities: “Being told that it can do all of these things is one thing, but actually seeing the capabilities, it was mind-blowing.” Such technology carries heavy implications for the workforce within the entertainment industry.
Expansion Plans Derailed
Envisioned to be a sprawling addition of 12 soundstages, the studio expansion in Atlanta would have bolstered the region’s reputation as a filmmaking powerhouse. However, the potential of AI to replicate any environment or scenario through mere textual input has led Perry to reconsider. “I no longer would have to travel to locations… If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing,” Tyler remarked to The Hollywood Reporter, voicing his deep concerns for the ripple effects on jobs across the industry.
Many would say AI is in no way capable of replicating the art, beauty and emotions of a real actor, to which I would agree. Regardless of whether or not this is true however, I believe the fact such a massive project would be halted by one of the world’s most powerful entertainment moguls due to the technology, speaks volumes about its potential impact in the years to come.
Many Tout Benefits, But Overshadowed by Concerns About Human Impact
Already employing AI in two upcoming films to sidestep hours in makeup, Perry acknowledges the benefits but remains wary of the broader ramifications. As technology races ahead, he calls for a unified approach to safeguard the livelihoods that could be rendered obsolete, suggesting that this is a moment for “galvanizing one voice in motion to help save, protect the individuals of our industry.”
Looking to the Horizon
The convergence of AI’s rapid development with the ongoing industry contractions poses significant challenges. Perry predicts this will be a “major game-changer,” with potential job losses on the horizon. “I really, really feel that very strongly,” he says.
